Dusan Petran began sculpting on wood while studying theater at
the Academy of Arts in Brno. He was first inspired by the
baroque masters and the works of sculptor Jiri Jilek. Often
humoristic, his oeuvre is inspired by mythical characters, Icarus,
Charon, Oraculum, as well as literary and artistic characters: the
Gertrude Stein series, Don Quichote, the painters series, Opera
Singer, Pinocchio as an Old Man: The Last Chapter. The artist
has created animated objects commissionned by theaters such as
the Denver Theater Center,
Patina has been a focus particularly in the last series. Colors and
textures delicately blanket solid matter. D. Petran's sculptures
show great mastery of his artistic vehicle. The artist sculpts wood
directly without preliminary work: an osmosis between artist and
artistic media. The results are astonishing as can be seen in his
Shakespeare series.
